I have a short list of superhero comic movies that I want to watch and yesterday I watched one of them, Green Lantern! I enjoyed the movie, but I’m not sure whether the 3D was necessary. It did not make me feel like I was there, which is the purpose of 3D right? Still, there were some funny scenes in the movie and many of them were funny because of Ryan Reynolds (who played Hall Jordan).
Non verbal scenes
Reynolds had a few non verbal scenes, which made me laugh. Here are two examples:
1/ You see a woman lying on her side on a twin bed, than a person next to her starts moving. It turns out to be Ryan Reynolds. He leans his cheek on the woman’s side and shows a super cute expression on his face, than he turns around to check his alarm clock. It was 7:45 and he finds out he’s late. The way he jumped up and put on his clothes was funny.
2/ Hall Jordan wakes up on Oa and checks out his new outfit. He pulls the fabric, touched his face [finds out he’s wearing a mask], sees his reflection and walks in an exaggerated manly/boyish way towards it. It was funny to see him admire himself.
Favourite quote
Apart from non verbal scenes he also had funny lines and my favourite quote of the movie is a scene where Hall Jordan is about to become a Green Lantern. He said: “…I Hall Jordan, do solely swear.. to pledge allegiance… to a lantern that I got from a dying purple alien… in a swamp. [aims ring at lantern] To infinity and beyond… By the power of grayskull… [he becomes angry] What the hell! Come on you can find me in a hundred miles in the middle of no where and you think… [Lantern radiates light] In brightest day, In blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight, Let those who worship evil’s might, Beware my power green lanterns light…”
The scene made me curious at first. How does the lantern work and what is the oath? But when he said: “To infinity and beyond” (a quote from Buzz Lightyear before he charges to the rescue - Disney’s Toy Story) and “By the power of grayskull” (said by He-man to charge his sword) I could not stop laughing.
Opinion on overall Green Lantern movie
The movie was funny but it is too bad that only Hall Jordan showed some humour or had a character development. The doctor who mutated into a fear feeding evil enemy was kind of sad. I was hoping he would have a better end. It was not exiting or trilling to see how he killed or destroyed people. I guess I did not find him evil enough or cunning enough, same goes for the fear feeding guardian. I hope the sequel will show a more evil fear feeding enemy… I expect they will… *spoiler alert* A green lantern turns into a yellow lantern ^^
Next superhero comic movie
But before that… The next superhero comic movie in my list is “Captain America: The First Avenger” with Chris Evans as Captain America. I am trilled on how they will portray Captain America with his shield and such. I am also looking forward to how Chris Evans will represent him.
Chris Evans has played Johnny Storm (“Flame on”, cute and a teaser) in the Fantastic Four movies, Nick Gant in Push (overall not a great movie, but his character was fun). I also saw him in the movie Street Kings a few weeks ago. The movie is about corruption and cops. Evans plays Detective Paul Diskant a young detective and a rookie cop in the battlefield. I was surprised to find actors Keanu Reeves and Hugh Laurie in the same movie… They have played various characters in different kind of movies and seeing them together in one movie was kind of strange!
Keanu Reeves has played: Officer Jack Traven/Neo/Kevin Lomax/Nelson Moss/John Constantine/Alex Wyler etc. In the movies: Speed / Matrix movies (follow the white rabbit) / The Devil’s Advocate (who is my father?) / Sweet November (he brings you Christmas in November) / Constantine (was a chain-smoker with long cancer) / The Lake House (he waited!)
Hugh Laurie has played: Prince Regent/Laurie/Mr. Palmer/Jasper/King’s Advisor/The Gentleman on the Plane/Ian/Mr. Fredrick Little/Dr. Gregory House etc. In the movies/tv series: Black Adder series / A Bit of Fry and Laurie (as himself, funny and very talented musician) / Sense and Sensibility (classy and patient gent) / 101 Dalmatians / The Man in the Iron Mask / Flight of the Phoenix / Stuart Little movies (loving father) / an episode of Friends (there is no way to stay polite…you can check the scenes here http://goo.gl/ds5z5) /House
Can you imagine these characters to be in one movie? This makes them great actors :3 Will Chris Evans belong to them one day?
