“Jess, can you help me? I can’t find my purse.”
She barked and pushed it into my hands. I’m glad, she exists. She is my friend and trusty companion.
I smiled, while I petted her head: “Good girl, thank you, Jess.”
I walked towards my front door and put on my shoes and jacket. Jess opened the door and we walked out. I locked the door and put the keys into Jess’ neck pocket. It’s the safest place to put the keys. I’ll have my hands full later with the groceries.
I: “Jess, let’s go buy some food for dinner.”
I felt, that Jess was happy because she wacked her tail and her breathing went up.
A few minutes later, we walked into a mini-mart and were greeted by the regulars. The shop owner, the part-timers who put things on the shelf and the errand boy. The errand boy always helps me with shopping, his name is Eric and he is the shop owners son.
Eric: “It is nice to see you again, miss Isabella and Jess.”
Jess barked and I smiled.
“What will it be today?”
“I’m going to cook pasta tonight. I’d like to buy pasta sauce and some vegetables eggplant, tomatoes, artichokes and salad of rucola, peppers and cherry tomatoes.”
He was smiling: “Let’s go to the pasta sauces first. What will it be? Basil, Fungi, four different cheeses...”
“What would you recommend?”
“I would choose the peeled tomatoes, mozzarella, basil sauce. The sauce is thick, because of the peeled tomatoes, the mozzarella is define and tastes smooth on the tongue and the basil can be smelled during the cooking. If you want more texture, you can add the vegetables you mentioned earlier. By adding fresh tomatoes the sauce will be less thick, but the el dente pasta will cook nicely in that way.”
Jess barked.
I smiled: “I guess Jess, likes the sound of that. I will take that bottle.”
Eric put the bottle in a basket and carried it for me: “Next up, the vegetables. I’ll hand you some bags.”
I knew exactly, where all the vegetables lay. The first day I came here, he let me touch each one of them and he assured me, that if he ever changed the order of it that he would tell me. I touched every ingredient, that I needed, while I weighed them with my hands I also smelled them. One by one I added fresh ingredients in a paper bag. One of the reasons why I love this shop, apart from the friendly people working here is the fact that everything in this store is biological.
Eric weighed them, after I filled the last bag he said: “Would you like anything else?”
I smiled: “Yes, a sack of dog biscuits for Jess and those meal bags.”
I heard Eric scanning and typing in the prices of the products: “That’s twenty-eight fifty.”
I opened my purse and took out a 20 and a 5 bill, than I looked for the coins of a 50 and 2. The forms and the weight feels natural to me, but people have told me that it looks like as if I’m not blind at all. I usually look or try to look at the things that I’m aiming for so that no one will notice that I’m blind or I hope that they think that I’m just partly blind. People tend to threat you differently if they know that you can’t even imagine what darkness means, but I’m not afraid of not knowing.
Eric: “Thank you, here’s your receipt.”
I smiled: “Thank you, that will come in handy for my accountant.”
Eric laughed: “That is funny. See you tomorrow.”
“I haven’t decided if I’m going out tomorrow. I might get delivery or go out to eat.”
Eric petted Jess: “Either way, take care. Jess, make sure she eats well. Bye miss Isabella and Jess.”
