Yesterday, I watched the movie "The Longest Ride". It is another romance movie that I put in the same category as "The Notebook". A movie about life decisions, that can mean the end of ones happiness or survive the difficulties because you love one another more than just love. A few spoilers will be mentioned in this blog...
Luke's and Sophia's first date
The way Luke asks Sophia out on a date showed that he is in control, but still values her opinion. He was a perfect gentleman. Luke is a bull rider and ran away from a bull after riding one. He climbed onto a fence and dropped his cowboy hat on the other side of the fence at the audience side. But while he ran, he saw Sophia and smiled broadly at her. When the bull was safely guided away he walked away. Sophia picked up his hat and called him. He turned around and looked at her and said smoothly that she can keep it. She put on the cowboy hat and had it on for the entire day.

In the evening it gave Luke the opportunity to talk to her by commenting on the hat. They started talking, flirting, a very normal conversation.
Luke: Can I buy you a drink? Before she could get a drink with him inside a bar, her friend came out, who felt sick. She had to eventually take her friend home. She wanted to get Luke's number, but she figured out that he wanted her number instead. He called her, but she missed the call. Two more months and she will be moving to New York away from North Carolina, so it took her awhile to call him back. When she finally did Luke was smooth again with a joke.
Sophia: Well, you’re the big winner, so, I should buy you a beer.
Luke: It doesn’t work like that where I’m from. I’m buying.
Sophia: You mean like a date? … Most guys just say, “What are ya doing?” or text you and ask if you want to hang out or something. Then the date! The way he took her out on a date, flowers and picking her up by car. It was woo-ing in the way that I used to see in the black and white movies. The gents, whom I would swoon for I guess. *smile* The date was a picnic at a beautiful lake and very romantic till the end with a camp fire, than she tells him the reason why she didn't call him earlier. His eyes changed from happy to sad. It starts to rain and he decides to take her home. He's a true gentleman from asking her out till the end of the date.
Luke: It doesn’t work like that where I come from.
What I found amazing is, is that Sophia told him how she felt for him which made him smile broadly: "We come from such different worlds but I've never felt this way about anybody. No one has ever done anything like this for me before."
A big family
The scene where Ruth breaks down, because she can't have a big family is heartbreaking. She tells Ira, her husband, that she has to go and so packs her things. You would expect him to make it difficult for her to leave, but he didn't do it in the way I thought he would. He loves her so much, that he let her go! The line that Ira said: "I just want you to be happy, even if that 'happy' doesn't include me any more.", made me think: "She will come back, when she has calmed down! Why would she ever let you go?!"

Letters
The time before e-mail, texting there was "snail-mail". The beautiful, warm-hearted, paper, pen written letter! I love handwritten letters and I always will. The handwriting, the knowledge of knowing the one who wrote it, hand-picked it and held it. And when the contents of the letter shows emotions and experiences, a story, a part of their life the letter becomes gorgeous. A letter to keep and read aloud again in the future.

Ira wrote letters to Ruth, even after the war he kept writing her letters. It is super romantic, but it is also filled with wonderful memories and their adventures together. Ruth might be an art collector and loves art, but Ira is an artists with words. The letters are amazing!
8 seconds
Luke wants the 8 seconds record and be the best bull rider of the world. It gets him to the point, that he breaks up with Sophia. His mum told him off.
The book
This movie was beautiful and many lines were gorgeous. Should I read the book "The longest ride" from Nicolas Sparks?

Luke’s mom: It’s 8 seconds. That’s all it is. That girl could be the rest of your life.
Later he discovers just in time that he made a mistake and tells Sophia: "If I could just ride that son of a … If I could just make the 8, I’d have everything I ever wanted… but the whole time I was thinking about you."
Somehow this sounds very similar to wants and needs. How can your brain decide, when your heart wants something else?
